Mercury Poisoning

In December 2011, EPA issued the first national standards for mercury pollution from power plants. MATS are the first national standards to protect American families from power plant emissions of mercury and toxic air pollution like arsenic, acid gas, nickel, selenium, and cyanide. The standards will slash emissions of these dangerous pollutants by relying on widely available, proven pollution controls that are already in use at more than half of the nation's coal-fired power plants. Mercury poisoning (also known as hydrargyria or mercurialism) is a disease caused by exposure to mercury or its compounds. Mercury (chemical symbol Hg) is a heavy metal occurring in several forms, all of which can produce toxic effects in high enough doses. Its zero oxidation state Hg⁰ exists as vapor or as liquid metal, its mercurous state Hg⁺ exists as inorganic salts, and its mercuric state Hg²⁺ may form either inorganic salts or organ mercury compounds; the three groups vary in effects. Toxic effects include damage to the brain, kidney, and lungs. Mercury poisoning can result in several diseases, including acrodynia (pink disease), Hunter-Russell syndrome, and Minamata disease.

Symptoms of mercury poisoning typically include sensory impairment (vision, hearing, speech), disturbed sensation and a lack of coordination. The type and degree of symptoms exhibited depend upon the individual toxin, the dose, and the method and duration of exposure.

What is Gold Film Technology?

The heart of Jerome is the well-proven gold film technology. A thin gold film, in the presence of mercury vapor or hydrogen sulfide gas, undergoes an increase in electrical resistance proportional to the mass of mercury vapor or hydrogen sulfide in the sample.

When the sample button is pushed, an internal pump pulls ambient air through a scrubber filter and into the flow system. The sample air is drawn over the gold film sensor.

The instrument determines the amount of the toxic gas adsorbed and displays the measurement in micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) or milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) for mercury, and parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppm) for hydrogen sulfide.

A Novel Investigation of Moisture and Ash Content in Biomass Materials

With the world’s population projected to eclipse 7 billion in 2011, and growing at approximately 1.2% per year, finding useable energy resources has become a global challenge. Diminishing supply and environmental concerns have been brought to light in recent years, exposing fossil fuels, currently the world’s primary source of energy, as unsustainable and potentially harmful to the environment. Because of this, clean renewable energy sources are controlling more of the available market, and biomass is one of the leading options on this front.

Biomass is renewable energy derived from living organic material, or material that was recently alive. Wood pellets, corn husks, refuse, black liquor (a waste product of the paper making industry), and alcohol fuels are common examples of materials that classified as biomass. These sources are more sustainable than fossil fuels and, like fossil fuels, are typically incinerated for energy production. Understanding and controlling the moisture and ash content of biomass is important for optimizing its efficiency as a fuel. Further, incomplete combustion generates black carbon, which is a pollutant and major contributor to global warming. Traditionally biomass materials have been analyzed for moisture using a conventional oven, and ash using a furnace. These methods are reliable, but often have long test times, which hinder the manufacturer’s ability to address problems that may arise during processing and decrease the materials ability to act as a suitable energy alternative.

A new method for moisture and ash analysis has been developed. Using the Computrac® MAX® 5000XL Moisture and Ash Analyzer, accurate moisture and ash testing was achieved. This instrument was able to provide real time results, and final water and ash concentrations correlated to standard test methods currently used for multiple materials in different industries. Test times were significantly reduced which affords manufacturers the opportunity to make changes in process quickly and maximize output.

Jerome® Communications Software (JCS)

The Jerome® Communications Software (JCS) operates with the Jerome® 431 Mercury Vapor and Jerome 631 Hydrogen Sulfide Analyzers that have the "Communications Configuration" option installed. The software can control instrument sampling for unattended continuous operation, collect data, graph this data in real time and perform statistical analysis.

The software can also program the Jerome® Data Logger, AZI P/N 6100-0010. This optional accessory enables data storage during manual sampling or portable automatic sampling without being attached to a computer. The data logger initiates automatic sampling, triggers alarms and stores data. The logged data may then be downloaded to the computer when it is convenient.

The JCI software is menu-driven and easy to use. Each display screen is designed for clarity with self-explanatory menu options, such as "Operate Instrument" or "Display Stored Data." Select menu options using either a mouse or a track ball pointing device or a standard keyboard. The user creates records, or files, for computer storage of collected data. Data is easily retrieved for later viewing, graphing, printing or editing with spreadsheet or word processing software, (not provided). Data can be used for ongoing record keeping or for fulfilling local regulatory requirements.

H2S Management by Monitoring

H2S is a common problem in the waste management industry. The unpleasant odor is not only a nuisance to customers and citizens, but is also physically harmful. H2S is a key ingredient in the deterioration of concrete (literally the foundation of this industry). There are methods commonly used to remove H2S from confined areas, but their high cost makes them impossible to implement everywhere. So, in order to manage the problems effectively, you must measure H2S reliably.

Arizona Instrument LLC manufactures the Jerome® line of H2S analyzers. These instruments are used to pinpoint problem areas within a system so the appropriate action can be taken. Because the human nose is very sensitive and can detect H2S at .008 ppm (parts per million), some companies feel that a nose test will tell them when and where they have a problem. Unfortunately H2S desensitizes the olfactory and after a few minutes that individual will not be able to smell the chemical anymore, making this method ineffective. People are incapable of detecting multiple problems at one time, and it is harmful to the individual. Jerome® analyzers read between .003 ppm and .050 ppm measuring, at levels where the H2S is dangerous for people and concrete. Without a Jerome® H2S analyzer it is not possible to assess problems for maximum savings of time and money.

Jerome J405 Mercury Vapor Analyzer

Performing a sensor regeneration Perform a sensor regeneration by following these steps:

• Connect the line cord/AC adapter power supply between the connector on the back of the J405 and an AC power outlet or connect the external battery pack to the back of the J405.
• If the instrument is not already turned on, press the I/O power button to turn it on.
• Press the RIGHT arrow button (►) to enter the main menu.
• Press the DOWN arrow button (▼) to move the cursor to Regen.
• Press the RIGHT arrow button (►) to select Regen from the menu.
• Press the ENTER/START button on the keypad to select Regen Now from the Regen menu.
→The instrument will respond with "Perform Regen Using EXTERNAL POWER?"
■ Press ENTER/START to proceed or ESC to exit.
→The instrument display will warn "Do Not Disconnect External Power while Heating"
■ Press ENTER/START to proceed or ESC to exit.
→The instrument will now begin a 45 minute regeneration cycle, indicated by Regeneration in Progress on the display. Do no interrupt this cycle. For a complete description of this process, see page 20 of the user manual.
■ If any error message appears on the siplay, see the "Troubleshooting" section beginning on page 35.
• Ensure the instrument has been powered on for at least five (5) minutes prior to sampling.
• The instrument is now ready to sample.
• Press the SAMPLE BUTTON at the end of the handle of the J405 to start a 12 second sampling cycle.
• When the instrument measures mercury vapor, the 0.00 µg/m3 display will be replaced with a value.
• To ensure the input to the instrument contains no mercury vapor or mercaptans, use a Zero Air Filter (AZI P/N Z2600 3905). The Zero Air Filter cleans the air sample and should produce sample readings of 0.00 µg/m3. Therefore, use the filter to:
■ Equilibrate the instrument to temperatures that are higher or lower than the instrument. Sample every 15 seconds with the filter installed until the reading is 0.00 µg/m3.
■ Identify contamination within the unit.
■ Confirm the presence of mercury vapor when readings are elevated. Install the filter and verify that the readings decrease with the filter installed.
• The instrument is designed for ambient air monitoring.

WARNING:

DO NOT allow the probe or the instrument's intake to be exposed to ANY liquid.
DO NOT obstruct the intake or exhaust ports of the J405, as this could cause errors in readings and damge to the flow control system.

• The instrument is not explosion proof.
• Perform sensor regeneration before each day's use.
• Perform another sensor regeneration after each day's use.
• Perform sensor regeneration after 30 days of storage or inactivity.

Hydrogen Sulfide Gas

If you wait for a warning, it may be too late

Hydrogen sulfide is a powerful and deadly gas which smells like rotten eggs at low concentrations and has a sweet smell at high concentrations. But workers should not rely on the smell as a warning. At high concentrations H2S may overcome one's sense of smell. The result could be instant death. Long exposure to low concentrations will also deaden the sense of smell.

What it is

H2S is explosive - it will ignite and explode when subjected to a spark or ordinary flame - in any concentration from 4% to 44% of the air. It is also soluble in water and oil, so it may flow for a considerable distance from its origin before escaping above ground or in an entirely unexpected place. Because the vapor (gas) is heavier than air, it may travel for a long way until ignited and then flash back towards the source.

Where is it found?

Hydrogen sulfide is found in large amounts in natural gas and petroleum. Any worker involved in extracting gas and petroleum from the ground, or in storing, transporting or processing gas is at risk from exposure to H2S Hydrogen sulfide exists in solution in crude oil, and workers are exposed when the gas begins to "pass off" as it reaches the surface or comes into contact with air. This can occur at any point, including all stages of the refining operation, and it is accelerated by heat or hot weather.

H2S Sources

H2S is found widely in industry and few workers are warned of its dangers or their exposure. It is formed by the decomposition of organic materials, so it is found in natural gas and oil, in mines, wells, fertilizers, sewers, and cesspools. It is given off as a by-product in the manufacture of rayon, synthetic rubber, dyes and the tanning of leather.

Health Effects of H2S acute exposure

First of all, and most important, H2S can kill you. The extent of acute poisoning danger depends on the concentration of H2S in the atmosphere.
When you breathe in H2S, it goes directly through your lungs and into your bloodstream. To protect itself, your body "oxidizes" (breaks down) the H2S as rapidly as possible into a harmless compound. If you breathe in so much H2S that your body can't oxidize all of it, the H2S builds up in the blood and you become poisoned. The nervous centers in your brain which control breathing are paralyzed. Your lungs stop working and you are asphyxiated - just as though someone had come up and put their hands around your neck and strangled you. A worker can be overcome by H2S and lose consciousness in a few seconds; luckily if he is rescued in time and is given artificial respiration within a few minutes, the worker may recover. Either artificial mouth-to-mouth or an oxygen supply system of resuscitation will work if it is done in time, because, with an adequate source of oxygen and no further H2S intake, the body will quickly break down the H2S still in the blood.

This is acute poisoning. It can occur with no warning at all, since even the sense of smell may be overcome, and it can be fatal within a few seconds.

Although acute poisoning is deadly if it is not caught in time, when caught and treated it is reversible and this is why rescue attempts with proper safety equipment are so important.

HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

* Routes of Exposure

Exposure to mercury vapor can occur through inhalation, and eye or skin contact.

* Summary of toxicology

1. Effects on Animals: Mercury vapor can damage the kidneys, liver, brain, heart, lungs and colon in experimental animals. It is also mutagenic and can affect the immune system. Rabbits exposed for a single 4 hour period to mercury vapor at a concentration of 28.8 mg/m(3) developed severe damage to the kidneys, liver, brain, heart, lungs, and colon [Clayton and Clayton 1981]. Rabbits exposed to 0.86 mg/m(3) for 6 weeks had significant brain and kidney damage, which resolved on cessation of exposure. Exposure to 6 mg/m(3) mercury vapor caused severe damage to the kidney, heart, lung, and brain of rabbits; however, dogs exposed to 0.1 mg/m(3) for 83 weeks had no microscopic indication of tissue damage [Clayton and Clayton 1981]. Mercury may injure the kidneys through an autoimmune mechanism [ACGIH 1991]. Mercury was mutagenic in eukaryotic cells [ACGIH 1991].

2. Effects on Humans: Mercury vapor can cause effects in the central and peripheral nervous systems, lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes in humans. It is also mutagenic and affects the immune system [Hathaway et al. 1991; Clayton and Clayton 1981; Rom 1992]. Acute exposure to high concentrations of mercury vapor causes severe respiratory damage, while chronic exposure to lower levels is primarily associated with central nervous system damage [Hathaway et al. 1991]. Chronic exposure to mercury is also associated with behavioral changes and alterations in peripheral nervous system [ACGIH 1991]. Pulmonary effects of mercury vapor inhalation include diffuse interstitial pneumonitis with profuse fibrinous exudation [Gosselin 1984]. Glomerular dysfunction and proteinuria have been observed mercury exposed workers [ACGIH 1991]. Chronic mercury exposure can cause discoloration of the cornea and lens, eyelid tremor and, rarely, disturbances of vision and extraocular muscles [Grant 1986]. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions have been reported in individuals exposed to mercury vapor [Clayton and Clayton 1981]. Mercury vapor is reported to be mutagenic in humans, causing aneuploidy in lymphocytes of exposed workers [Hathaway et al. 1991]. READ MORE

Evaluation of Portable Mercury Vapor Monitors and Their Response to a Range of Simulated Oil Processing Environments

Abstract
Portable mercury vapor monitors are relied on for quick decision making to determine safe work practice requirements. There is little specific information regarding their use limitations and/or potential interference data, especially in environments of high temperature/humidity and various concentrations of hydrocarbons (HC) and inorganic gases, as are commonly found in oil processing environments. This work was undertaken to objectively assess the accuracy of each monitor under ideal conditions and then assess the effects of potentially interfering conditions or substances on monitor accuracy. This data was used to highlight specific limitations and create field user guides.

A secondary objective was to compare the overall usability and user-friendliness of the monitors evaluated. The paper describes the experimental method used and results provided by several mercury vapor monitors exposed to known concentrations of mercury vapor while other variables such as temperature, relative humidity and the concentration of potentially interfering compounds were varied to simulate field measurement conditions. Two types of detection technology were assessed, Gold Film resistance and Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption, (CVAAS). All monitors were tested against a variety of potential interference compounds, e.g., organics, benzene, toluene, and inorganics, ammonia, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. The testing revealed several strengths and weaknesses for each monitor. Negative interference was found with the Gold Film unit in high relative humidity (RH). All CVAA units showed positive interference with high organic concentrations. Poor repeatability across the entire exposure range is common. The amount of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) produced by yeast during fermentation has a significant effect on beer flavor. Control of H2S production is important in brewing due to its very low threshold for detection. H2S is formed as an intermediate during reductive sulfate assimilation, which leads to formation of the sulfur-containing amino acids methionine and cysteine. Typically, a cropped yeast from one fermentation is continuously reused to pitch subsequent lager fermentations. The physiologic state of the cropped yeast is thought to influence the quality of the subsequent fermentations. DNA microarray analysis has recently been used to compare genome-wide patterns of gene expression in the bottom-fermenting yeast Saccharomyces pastorianus.

Here, we investigated the relationship between the physiological state of the cropped yeast and its ability to produce H2S. A strain of S. pastorianus was used to ferment wort at a normal and at an elevated temperature and was then cropped and subjected to microarray analysis. The ability of the cropped yeast to produce H2S during the subsequent fermentation was also analyzed. H2S production by the yeast cropped from the fermentation conducted at the higher temperature was greater than that at the normal temperature. Expression of genes involved in reductive sulfate assimilation was found to have increased in the yeast cropped from the fermentation conducted at the higher temperature, suggesting elevated consumption of methionine. Therefore, we examined the effect of adding methionine to the wort. H2S production by the yeast cropped from the fermentation supplemented with methionine was found to be lower. DNA microarray analysis indicated that the addition of methionine resulted in a decrease in the expression of genes involved in the sulfate assimilation pathway. These data suggest that H2S production can be controlled by alteration of fermentation conditions and wort composition.

Extremely Low Level Mercury Vapor Analysis

Some applications require the analysis of mercury at very low levels, for example, 100 nanograms/cubic meter (ng/mg3) or .0001 milligrams/cubic meter (mg/m3) level. For this testing, a variation on the standard flow rate of 5 cc/minute may be more practical in order to shorten the sample collection time.

NOTE: Arizona Instrument recommends a flow rate of 5 cc/minute for most industrial hygiene applications. Specifications are written based on suchy a flow rate. H2S will rob you blind if left unchecked!

Concrete is the foundation of the waste management industry. Pipes, buildings, and treatment facilities are constructed with this seemingly sound material. Thousands of miles of concrete pipes lie underground as a network for this industry to manage sewage and water. Not only is this pipe network crucial to the operations of this industry, but it is also one of its biggest expenses. Installing these pipes requires a tremendous amount of time, money and manpower. In order to preserve this investment, the pipes must be actively managed, because there is a gas that is wearing down, corroding these pipes, and overtime all of them will fail at the hands of H2S.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gas being produced naturally in sewage. This gas reacts with gypsum in the concrete and causes erosion. H2S leads to the creation of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and together these chemicals attack concrete. Concrete isn’t the impervious rock that people like to assume it is, and over time the structural integrity is affected, creating big problems for the managing company.

These problems can be fixed though. H2S can be removed from confined spaces, but the process of removal needs to be applied strategically to keep prices down. Randomly administering H2S removal technology would likely result in high costs and inadequate elimination of the problem. That is why effective testing is necessary for managing the problem and protecting infrastructure.

Arizona Instrument LLC manufactures the Jerome® H2S analyzer. This instrument is used to pinpoint problem areas within a system so the appropriate action can be taken. Because the human nose is very sensitive and can detect H2S at .008 ppm (parts per million), some companies feel that a nose test will tell them where they have a problem. The problem with this theory is that H2S desensitizes the olfactory and after a few minutes the individual will not be able to smell the chemical anymore. This makes people incapable of detecting multiple problems at one time, and it is harmful to the individual. Without it a Jerome® H2S analyzer it is not possible to accurately assess problems.

Jerome® analyzers read between .003 ppm and .050 ppm. At these levels, hydrogen sulfide is not just a nuisance, but also a real danger to concrete infrastructure. Personal H2S monitors are not an alternative instrument because they are used by personnel to protect them from dangerous levels of this gas and operate in a much higher range (10 ppm to 100 ppm).

Mercury Contamination

If Mercury contamination is suspected, what must be done?

The following test must be performed:

1. Enclose the suspect material in a polyethylene bag or close-fitting airtight container for eight hours at room temperature (76°F to 86°F). Or, place the bag in an oven set at 125°F (+/-5°) for one hour.

2. Make a small slit in the bag and sample the air with a mercury vapor analyzer.

3. If the mercury vapor concentration is greater than 0.01 µg/m3, the material is contaminated and will be cause for rejection.

Tech Tip: Regenerate, regenerate, regenerate!

It is very important to regenerate your Jerome® J405, 431X or 631X Analyzer twice a day. Regenerating at the beginning of the day provides optimum accuracy and response of the instrument when sampling. Regenerating at the end of the day when sampling is complete will clean the Gold Film Sensor and prolong the life of your sensor.

Reminder about the Jerome® 651!

I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you about some of the great things about our Jerome® 651. It is indeed a fenceline monitoring instrument, and can be used in a variety of applications, including automated scrubber monitoring and stack monitoring. It also comes with an anemometer.

Jerome®, Mercury Vapor Detection

With the proven reliability of the gold film sensor and the growing need for lower detection we came out with the Jerome® J405 model. With the detection limit able to read accurately down to 0.5 micrograms per cubic meter it meets EPA & ATSDR cleanup levels.

Once again, the J405 establishes Arizona Instrument as the leader in portable mercury vapor detection. Also, the J405 is a great alternative to UV spectroscopy for cleanup in residential areas. The J405 doesn't respond to hydrocarbons like UV technology does.

Jerome® is the better choice!

With the continuous changes in regulations and the demand for new technology, Arizona Instrument has met the demand with the new Jerome® 405 and 471 models. However, we still have a substantial base of customers who do not need the newer technology and would prefer to stick with our 431 model. We have several customers call and ask us what the future of the 431 is.

The 431 model has been a solid performer for us since 1991 and was an industry standard for many, many years. It is still a viable instrument and still holds a high value in the market today. Arizona Instrument plans to continue the manufacturing and support of the 431 for many years to come.

The Jerome® J405 portable mercury vapor monitor is redefining the portable mercury vapor analyzer market. Significant performance enhancements and modern communications capabilities have been combined to create a new option for mercury spill detection and cleanup analysis. Like its 411 & 431X predecessors, the J405 utilizes the industry-proven, inherently stable and reliable gold film sensor technology and simple, one-button operation. The ergonomically-designed handle, lighter exterior case and significantly lower detection capabilities (0.5 μg/m3) have re-set the bar for portable and easy, low-level mercury detection instrumentation.
The larger display, on-board data logging, auto zeroing, and battery-powered sensor regeneration will simplify operation and maintenance in the field. Menu-driven programming, USB data communications and SCADA compatibility via 4-20 ma output further enhance data retrieval, storage and reporting.
